I’m trying to wrap my head around how all of this works together and honestly my brain is starting to hurt. I was in a pretty serious accident at a manufacturing plant here in Kingston about 14 months ago crushed my hand, multiple surgeries, the whole nightmare and my workers’ comp has been covering my medical bills and giving me about two-thirds of my old wages, which is barely enough to get by. My doctor just told me last week that he doesn’t think I’ll ever regain full use of my hand and that going back to my old job is probably off the table permanently. That hit me like a ton of bricks, but now I’m trying to figure out what comes next. I’ve heard people mention applying for Social Security disability on top of workers’ comp, but I’ve also heard that one can reduce the other and that the rules are really complicated. I’ve been looking into finding a disability benefits attorney Kingston NY who handles both types of claims because I don’t want to accidentally screw myself by filing for something at the wrong time or missing some offset rule that ends up costing me money. Has anyone here gone through applying for SSDI while still getting workers’ comp checks? How does the offset actually work in practice, and did having one claim open make it harder or easier to get approved for the other? I’m trying to plan ahead for what my life is going to look like once my workers’ comp settlement closes out and I’m still not able to work. Any insight would be huge.
